Rob Dillingham gets 100% real on potential fit with Victor Wembanyama, Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are entering a pivotal offseason. San Antonio can pair more talent with star center Victor Wembanyama in the 2024 NBA Draft. The Spurs possess the fourth and eighth picks, and one player on their radar is former Kentucky basketball guard Rob Dillingham. Dillingham displayed optimism about a potential fit with San Antonio after the NBA Draft Combine.

Dillingham took a “can-do attitude” when revealing his feelings to reporters on how he could gel with the team.

“I haven’t talked to [the Spurs] yet from a standpoint of just looking at it, I feel like I would be a good fit for them. Anything that a team wants me to do, I feel like I can be a good fit. And that’s with any team, honestly,” Dillingham said, via HoopsHype.

It is great to hear Dillingham be optimistic about potentially going to San Antonio. His response was rather grounded, but he was more expressive when speaking about playing next to Victor Wembanyama. He holds Wembanyama in high regard and has the ultimate plan if he gets the opportunity to play with him.

“That was the craziest first year in a long time,” Dillingham said about Wembanyama’s historic rookie numbers, via the San Antonio Express. “He could be one of the best players ever. If I’m playing with Wemby, it’s obvious: I am coming in to give Wemby the ball.”

Wembanyama’s already-stout production could take a new form given alongside Dillingham. The star center averaged 21.3 points, 10.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and a league-leading 3.6 blocks through 69 games of the 2023-24 season. As a result, he won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award and was a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year.

Dillingham was stellar for the Kentucky basketball program during the 2o23-24 season. The former five-star recruit averaged 15.2 points and shot a red-hot 44.0 percent on three-pointers during the 2023-24 season. In addition, he helped lead Kentucky to a first-round NCAA Tournament showing.

Unfortunately, the Wildcats’ March Madness run ended when they shockingly lost 80-76 to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in round one. Nevertheless, Dillingham and former teammate Reed Sheppard had successful freshman seasons and are looking to start their professional journeys.

Dillingham would inject instant offense into the Spurs if the team selects him in the 2024 NBA Draft. Moreover, the 6’3″ guard fills a need the Spurs are lacking. San Antonio seemingly has a lock at the center and forward positions, so bringing in someone like Dillingham would boost the depth of their guard spots.

One concern with Dillingham’s fit is the Spurs’ need for defense. Victor Wembanyama is San Antonio’s anchor, but all other starters could improve their defensive tenacity. Dillingham is more of an offensive threat than a defensive stopper. Nevertheless, his quickness could help him catch opposing offenses off guard and allow him to tally a fair number of steals.

It will be interesting to see if Dillingham lands with the Spurs as the NBA Draft approaches.
