D-backs’ Manager Finds Bright Spot in Tough Loss to Tigers
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

While there was not much for Torey Lovullo to say after the Diamondbacks’ 13-0 loss against the Tigers, he did find one positive to highlight during the postgame press conference: the game was over.

Reflecting on the dismantle, Lovullo remarked, “That was a painful game, you know, we absorbed a lot, we took on a lot. The one good thing about today is it’s over, and we gotta turn the page and we get a new day, we get a new crack at it tomorrow.”

Lovullo went on to praise the Tigers’ offensive approach. Detroit, who were previously shut out by the Marlins (the 2nd worst pitching team in baseball) in back-to-back games heading into tonight, exploded for 17 hits off the D-backs.

Colt Keith and Javier Baez, both batting below .200 this season, combined for a 7-9 performance. The bottom third of Detroit’s lineup inflicted the most damage.

After crediting the Tigers approach at the plate, he dove into his pitching staff for a minute, saying, “We didn’t execute today on the mound, it’s not like the Tigers got after us and we didn’t execute, so it was a combination of a lot of things. Good offensive team, lack of execution is what we saw tonight.”

Ryne Nelson, whose season ERA climbed above 7.00, struggled, allowing eight earned runs in four innings. While no home runs were surrendered, Detroit capitalized on driving balls into the gaps and applying pressure on the basepaths.

Lovullo also gave a shoutout to Tarik Skubal, an Arizona native who attended high school in Kingman. Skubal allowed just one hit in his six innings on the mound. Lovullo commented, “A lot of velo, a lot of location, a lot of mixture, it was about as good as we’ve seen today this year. He was real impressive.”
